| ARTIST’S STATEMENT: First consideration is given to the line; lines are mortal. Between their points of advent and departure, it is as if a life span of sorts has been recorded. A sudden and fleeting moment of small consequence or the epic of an enduring aeon potentially reside within endless variants of length, width, depth, and overlap of lines. In the artist’s hand these lines may be ordered to assemble in recognitions of the human condition, or to portray various desires, fears, the simple and the ornate, familiar landscapes, or the vast and fantastic. This is most visually evident in line-intensive works of pen and ink but equally prevalent in the guiding of my brush strokes and paint. A line no matter how small holds its merit, and a line no matter how twisted and long will eventually reach its end. My art communicates, in these linear concepts, a beginning and an end often in allegorical representation and symbolism. Sometimes a concept is inarticulate by any other means. The mysticism of my art is not that of the great cosmic wheel of time without beginning or end; rather it is the linear nature of moments and time spans, and ages which comprise the whole of my eternity in which my art seeks its substance. I was told by some wise folks to think outside the box, but then I found that I was trapped within their circle. When an artist dismantles the boxes of rigid tradition and when he dismantles the circles of contemporary bias and dictates, he is left again with lines. The artist then is free to think and create outside both box and sphere with shapes and themes of his own combination and inspiration. There is a current in my art which seeks to weave my perceptions of the remote past with the present, with perhaps a hint of the eternal. |

Alexander the Great Enters Persia Ink 14” x 17” Alexander is deified as he conquers and enters Persia . This is illustrated by his face appearing in the sphere of the sun rather than between the curls of his hair. He is escorted by either four of his generals, or four watchers; I never quite decided. |

Conception of Alexander The Great Acrylic 11” x 14” The seated woman is the mother of Alexander; the bowl in her lap is her womb. The bird with a child’s face perched on the bowl’s rim is the pre-born spirit of Alexander. The four dark birds on the horizon are the princes of Persia . The halo of insects around his mother’s head are the armies and nations which will follow Alexander in his life. The ripples in the water are shockwaves in the sea of history. |

Enoch the Scribe Acrylic 24” x 36” Enoch is visualizing the future, depicted amidst the shapes of events which have not yet happened. Such shapes are largely abstractions until their fulfillment. Enoch himself is an abstraction. Because of the great remoteness of the past in which he lived, a great mystery and abstraction surrounds both him and his visions. |
